Calling All Bloggers! :-)

Is anyone else blogging about the class? I've met Andrea - word2live.wordpress.com - and Shilpa - sugarcandy243.com - and I would be so glad to find some more people using a blog as their personalized format for sharing thoughts and ideas about the readings (the discussion board just feels so impersonal and awkward). If you do have a blog, leave a comment here!

  1. Hi Laura! I followed your link from the course forum...following blogs is an excellent idea! My blog isn't specifically about the course, but I have already posted a couple of items about the course and I'll give you the link to my courera tag: http://rachelreadingnthinking.blogspot.com/search/label/Coursera%20Fantasy%2FSF

I loved your thoughts on Hans in Luck by the way!

  2. Rachel, your blog looks super (love the title, ha ha) - I've subscribed and look forward to your posts about the course. I will confess that I am more of a fan of Philip Pullman than you are (the second volume, Subtle Knife, is one of my favorite fantasy books of all time; Amber Spyglass is admittedly my least favorite of the three, but I still re-read it every year or so)... and I am likewise very curious to see which books we read for the class will be "crowd favorites" and which less so. I wish they had some polls up for voting on stuff - it would be fun to see which tale(s) are the favorites from Grimm, and later on to see which of the novels people like best. The massiveness of the class is kind of intimidating, but there could be advantages into having a whole crowd of people sharing their take on things! :-)

  3. Yes, the massiveness is fun in one way...we get exposed to so many ideas. But it certainly makes the forum a mess. And the forum is already a mess just by design. I'll follow the forum and more individual conversations as well. :)

    1. Luckily we can link to individual forums (I haven't figured out yet if it is possible to link to individual posts within a forum; I am afraid it is not possible, argh) - so if we share the discussions we find really good, that will help. The one on Hans in Luck was really great; I am glad I found it. https://class.coursera.org/fantasysf-2012-001/forum/thread?thread_id=464

  4. Hmmm, that link isn't working for me at the moment. Maybe it's a temporary issue. But I think I know the thread you're talking about, anyway. :)

  5. I was getting all kinds of "internal server errors" when trying to post there a while ago... maybe there was just too much Hans going on, ha ha. :-)

  6. I just joined the class, so I am a little bit behind the ball... and I won't be blogging it quite as thoroughly as you've been, but I am bound to do some posts about it, about the readings! I'll likewise use a tag to identify the posts.

Your posts are just fantastic, by the way.

  7. Thanks, Jenna - I love the content of this class, and it is going to be really hard to keep up once my own classes start, but somehow I am going to find a way. I won't be able to blog as much once my own classes start, but I will surely be just as excited about the stuff. I bet if they put up a poll to see how totally pressed for time people are, it would turn out that everybody in class is scrambling to find time. :-)

  9. Hey!!! I am also in Rabkin's class, and your wonderful blog has inspired me to start my own based on my thoughts on the course.

I'm new to the whole blogging thing, so my blogging name and title are entirely based on the class. I have also found the forums to be a little unproductive, so I plan on using my blog as a way to brainstorm about the readings. I look forward to exchanging some ideas with you, and everyone else you have met through this system!

I just published my very first post, which I think of as a rough draft for the assignment. More to come soon!!

  10. Hi Geovanna! I cannot read Spanish alas, but I can read Italian and I found an Italian fellow's blog. I bet there will be other people blogging in Spanish also.

Clever Eva! What a great name to choose, ha ha. I also really like the pretty background you chose for the blog. That's the thing about the discussion boards - everyone/everything looks the same, but online we need ways to be more individual, convey a personal identity online with our avatars, or the design choices we make, etc. I look forward to reading your posts.

  11. I haven't written much about it yet on my blog, but am going to try and post more, so I've set up a category for it: http://www.susanhatedliterature.net/category/coursera-scififan/

And there is a Mr. Linky on my first post there if anyone wants to add their blog, I'll add any I spot, but I'm sure I'll miss some.

  12. I tried to follow the forums but it was too chaotic for me. I enjoy reading the blogs, even though I am not writing one myself.

  13. You win, Laura:) Reading your posts and hopping from one student blog to another, I've finally started my own. There's barely anything there for now, but do come over sometime. I'd like to hear from you.
The forum is tolerable to me, but I missed the ability to check out threads I've participated in and have been updated since last visit. It helps a lot and much neater than hundreds of notification emails flooding your inbox.

    1. Great, Lisa! School starts for me this week, so I won't have time to spend at the forums... but I will definitely be keeping up with the blogs that I have subscribed to. Let me know the link to your blog, or maybe you added it to the list Andrea is keeping at the thread in the discussion board? I was really glad I had a lot of time for the first week of class to make connections with people and get oriented... but today is my first day back at work, getting ready for Fall semester, so I will have to be more efficient about spending time - and I suspect that is true for almost everyone in the class. Life is so busy! :-)

On the contrary, the first week is one of the busiest week of school. By next week we'll have Lebaran holiday, so two weeks of bibliophile goodness!

Bid you good luck in your class! I checked out your website and it was interesting. Do you teach online class for general audience too?
