Island of Doctor Moreau (Audible.com)

I am REALLY enjoying the Audible.com recording for H.G. Wells' Island of Doctor Moreau. The reader, Alan Munro, is very good, and Wells' vivid, very visual style of writing lends itself to a good listening experience. There is also a recording of the book at LibriVox!

Brothers Grimm (Audible.com)

I've been listening to an audiobook from Audible.com which contains the tales of the Brothers Grimm in the Margaret Hunt translation; the reading is by Kelly Lintz. The reader is very lively, which is good, but her accents are just all over the place and while I appreciate the variety of voices she uses, some of her "funny voices" actually distract from the story itself. Overall, I am glad to be listening to the recording - but I would rate it as just average.

Meanwhile, there is a selection of Grimm tales with various readers at LibriVox, with 62 stories from the Taylor/Edwardes translation. (Meanwhile, there are also LibriVox recordings of the tales in German!)

The Joy of the Public Domain

One of the things that immediately attracted me to this course - Coursera: Fantasy & SciFi - Rabkin - was the use of public domain books; for a sense of just what that means, here is a listing of the public domain authors for the course, with a link to the Penn Online Books listing for each author:

The listings at POB are not complete by any means, since it is the nature of public domain books to appear in all kinds of guises through all kinds of distribution channels - but it's still useful to look at the POB listing to see which titles for which authors are listed there. (FYI the contemporary authors on the reading list are Ray Bradbury and Ursula LeGuin, along with Cory Doctorow, who is a special case, as he is an Internet maverick of the finest kind - his book Little Brother can be downloaded for free.)

Speaking for myself, as a teacher, I am thrilled by the availability of full-text books online (often with illustrations, and now often available in audio, too). I built my Myth-Folklore online course at the University of Oklahoma using public domain materials - and I built that course back in 2002. The range of digitized public domain materials has increased tremendously since I built the course ten years ago; if I were to build it again now, I would have an even wider range of materials to choose from to create that course.

For people who are not aware of how the public domain works, there is good background information at Wikipedia. You can also read about the way the U.S. Congress has obstructed the expansion of the public domain by extending copyright protections (Copyright Term Extension Act), with the result that no new works are entering the public domain.

One of my favorite places to enjoy the public domain and to keep up with public domain news is the Public Domain Review - highly recommended!

MOOCS!

In addition to being very interested in the content of this course per se, I am also fascinated by the opportunity and challenge of a MOOC. I'll probably save most of my thoughts about that for sharing at Google+ where there is a great community of people interested in MOOCs even if they are not fantasy/scifi fans (although I am guessing the overlap is pretty large, ha ha). Anyway, here at the blog I'll try to remember to post links to some MOOC discussions happening over at Google+.

BOOKS!

Yes, I was always the kind of kid who loved books far more than school ... and with the same nerdy excitement I always felt buying my books early for college classes, I just had a fun romp through Audible.com and Amazon buying some books for the Coursera Fantasy class with Eric Rabkin. One of the main selling points for me was that most of the readings are public domain books that are freely available online - but I am also a huge fan of audiobooks, so I was delighted to find lots of audio versions at Audible.com also. Reading, listening... FUN. I am so excited about this course.

I tried another MOOC back in May (the Curtis Bonk course offered by Blackboard Course Sites) - and in every way, it was the wrong course for me; the readings put me to sleep and the software made my brain hurt. For this MOOC, the readings themselves are reason enough to take the class, and surely the software can be no worse than Blackboard, right?

Since keeping up with the class will be a real challenge for me, esp. as I get my own classes ready in August, I am going to try to do as much reading in advance as I can. So, I'll be blogging here at random about the books as I read them over the next month in advance of the class. I'm hoping to find other people doing the same - so, if you are planning on taking the course and setting up a blog, let me know and I'll add your blog to a blogroll here. I'm not sure what the "official" hashtag will be for this course, but I'm using #courserafantasy for now.

Meanwhile, thank you, Coursera, and thank you, Eric Rabkin, for what looks like a very intriguing course! And thanks as always to Google for the chance to blog with Blogger... :-)
